Research Interests

1) Sea-land coupled processes and integrated catchment/coastal/nearshore management:

Many phy/chem/bio processes are strongly coupled between the marine environment in the coastal sea and terrestrial river basins at various levels. At present in China, the separated land and ocean environment management structures are the drawback for possible effective and integrated management of the coastal environment. In the context of the foreseen global climate change and intensified human activities, scientific investigations will be conducted for various processes (sediment transport and coastal change, surface groundwater exchange, etc.). Furthermore, technology and supporting tools will be developed for integrated management of coastal and nearshore marine environment.

2) Development of marine and environmental observations and exploration technology:

Intelligent image based techniques have been used for the development of instruments for marine and environmental observation. By taking advantages of state-of-art sensor technology as well as advanced communication and network technology, we aim to develop a new generation of observing systems. Marine renewable energy and ocean exploration technologies will also be developed.

3) Modeling and risk assessment of oil spills and other ocean pollution:

Pollutants mixing and dispersion will be studied together with its chemical, biological and ecological effects for oil spills and other ocean pollutions in the marine environment. Simulation and risk assessment tools will be developed to help on environmental damage reduction.
